No. APEX has students who started training in their 30s, 40s, and well beyond. Martial arts is one of the most adaptable physical activities available — coaches modify movements and intensity to suit your current fitness level and any physical limitations you have. Starting later means you bring life experience, patience, and motivation that younger students often lack. Age is genuinely not a barrier.

Being out of shape is one of the best reasons to start. Martial arts builds fitness progressively and naturally — you do not need to be fit to begin, you get fit by training consistently. Coaches will work with your current conditioning and help you scale effort appropriately. Most students are surprised by how quickly their stamina, strength, and flexibility improve within the first few weeks.

You will be welcomed by a coach, given a brief tour of the facility, and paired with an experienced training partner who will guide you through the session. Classes include a warm-up, technique demonstration by the instructor, partner drilling, and optionally some light positional work at the end. Nobody expects you to know anything on day one. The goal of your first class is simply to have a good experience and leave wanting to come back.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the most popular starting point for adult beginners. It is technical and strategic, emphasizes leverage over strength, and is extremely effective for self-defense. Kickboxing is an excellent alternative if you want more cardiovascular conditioning and prefer striking. Many adults start with one and eventually add the other. Our coaches are happy to help you choose based on your specific goals.

Start with two classes per week. Your body needs time to adapt to the new movements and physical demands, and your mind needs time to process and retain what you are learning. Most students naturally increase to three or four sessions per week after their first month once the initial soreness subsides and the training becomes habit. Consistency over intensity is the key principle for beginners.

The risk of injury is low when you train smart. At APEX, the culture emphasizes safety first — tapping early in BJJ, controlled intensity in striking, and communicating openly with training partners. Coaches actively reinforce safe habits in every class. Most minor soreness early on is normal muscle adaptation, not injury. Listen to your body, follow coach guidance, and the training environment is genuinely safe.

Physical improvements — increased energy, better flexibility, and noticeable conditioning gains — typically appear within two to four weeks of consistent training. Technical competence and confidence build more gradually over months. The important thing is not to measure progress by comparing yourself to other students. Your baseline is your own starting point, and most people report feeling noticeably different after just a few weeks of consistent training.

No. For your first few classes, just wear comfortable athletic clothing — a t-shirt and athletic shorts or pants work perfectly. Avoid anything with pockets, zippers, or buttons. If you continue in BJJ, you will eventually want a Gi uniform, which is available at the gym. Coaches will let you know exactly what equipment to purchase once you decide to enroll, so there is no guesswork or upfront cost required.

It is one of the most effective stress relief tools available. The physical exertion burns off cortisol and adrenaline built up from daily stress. The mental focus required during training — especially in BJJ, where you are constantly problem-solving — leaves no room for the mind to ruminate. Many adult students describe training as their therapy. The community aspect and sense of progress also contribute significantly to mental wellbeing.

Absolutely. The majority of adult students at APEX train for fitness, stress relief, self-confidence, and personal growth — not competition or fighting. You will never be required or pressured to compete or spar beyond your comfort level. Martial arts training provides excellent full-body fitness and mental benefits completely independently of any competitive or combative goals.
