Kids Martial Arts — Frequently Asked Questions
Kids can start as young as 3 years old at APEX. Our Little Champions program (ages 3–6) is specifically designed for that age group, focusing on coordination, listening skills, and fun movement rather than combat. Ages 7 and up can join structured BJJ classes with more technique focus. The earlier children start, the more natural the skills become — but there is no wrong age to begin.
Yes, safety is our top priority. All kids classes use age-appropriate techniques, experienced youth coaches, and properly padded training mats. Young children do not participate in full-contact sparring — classes focus on technique, controlled partner drills, and fun games that build body awareness. APEX coaches are trained to work with kids at every developmental stage.
Research and real-world experience consistently show the opposite effect. Martial arts teaches children discipline, respect for others, and genuine self-control. One of the first things kids learn is when not to use what they know. Students who train regularly become more calm and confident, not more aggressive — because they no longer feel the need to prove themselves.
It depends on your child's age, personality, and interests. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is excellent for developing problem-solving, patience, and ground self-defense skills. Kickboxing builds coordination, cardio, and striking confidence. Wrestling develops explosive athleticism and overall body strength. Many families start with BJJ and add a second discipline over time. Our coaches are happy to make a recommendation based on your child's goals.
For the first class, your child only needs comfortable athletic clothing — a t-shirt and athletic shorts or pants work perfectly. No special equipment is required to try a class. If your child continues in BJJ, they will eventually need a Gi uniform, which is available for purchase at the gym. Our coaches will let you know exactly what to get once your child is enrolled.
Pricing varies by program and membership type. We offer family discounts for households with multiple students training, which makes it very affordable for parents and kids to train together. Contact us directly for current rates — we're happy to walk you through all membership options and any current enrollment specials. Your child's first class is always free with no commitment required.
Two to three times per week is the sweet spot for building skills and staying consistent. Many families start with two classes per week to see how their child responds, then increase once they are hooked. Consistency matters far more than frequency — a child who trains twice a week every week will progress faster than one who trains five times for a month and then stops.
Yes, in multiple ways. Children who train martial arts develop real physical confidence, which bullies typically avoid targeting. More importantly, they learn verbal de-escalation skills and understand how to walk away from a situation without feeling like they lost. If a situation does become physical, they have practical tools to protect themselves. The confidence boost from martial arts training is often visible to parents within just a few weeks.
Absolutely. Every child's first class at APEX is completely free, with no commitment and no credit card required. We want you and your child to experience the environment and meet the coaches before making any decisions. Book online or give us a call and we will set everything up.
Classes begin with warm-up games that build coordination and get kids engaged and moving. Coaches then demonstrate techniques which students practice with a partner in controlled drills. Classes close with fun challenges or team games that reinforce the lesson. Most kids classes run 45 to 60 minutes depending on the age group. The atmosphere is structured but always positive and encouraging.
